Magic Drogon

Y’all, it is TUESDAY and I’m still reeling over Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones. Like, WHAT?! My adrenaline pumps every time I think about it, we’ve watched the episode twice, and the battle scene three times because IT’S. JUST. THAT GOOD.

Before I begin bursting at the seams from the excitement of this episode – ever since Game of Thrones came back on, my thoughts are filled with (& my time is spent doing) little else besides GOT theories and discussion on where this show is heading based off prophecies and foreshadowing from previous episodes! So naturally if my thoughts are filled with much else than GOT, some of my makeup looks have been inspired by the show as well. Sooo geeky right? Whatever – je m’en fous!

I brought the Lit Cosmetics glitter in Magic Dragon into my arsenal quite a while ago, and though I’ve have had plenty of ideas on different looks to use it with, I’d just never actually got to it. Here’s the thing – glitter is my favorite color and all, but it’s messy and you have to really have patience to use it. And most days I’m trying my best to keep it quick. Perhaps because this was my last weekend in the States before leaving for Greece, and since I usually do most of my more elaborate painting on Saturday/Sunday but won’t be home for the next 2 – I felt really, REALLY compelled to pull out Magic Dragon for Game of Thrones day.

And BOOYYYYY, it was like I knew what this episode had in store! (and no, I was not aware of the HBO hack)

We are over half way through this abbreviated season (*tear*), and this season’s been all about the family reunions! Meera leaves an ungrateful and awkward Bran to return to her family before the frozen undead come, Arya returns to Winterfell to be with her siblings who’ve all had some EFFED up stuff happen to them over the years, shows off her AMAZING water dancing skills, Theon arrives back at Dragonstone and Jon greets him SO warmly, but my favorite had to have been when Tyrion reunites with his Lannister fam – from afar.

I’m not an action movie kind of girl. Battle scenes/violence gives me way too much more anxiety than I can really handle and I just want to know if my favorite people continue to live – which in the GOT world, is truly an emotional rollercoaster and quite the gamble. But hearing the terrifying war cry of the Dothraki horde over the horizon, the thundering gallop of all their horses, and then seeing a shrieking Drogon appear out of the clouds all while the Lannister army scurries around in feigned military courage – I. WAS. SHOOK.

FINALLY, the Mother of Dragons show off her babies! And them Dothraki jumping on top of their moving beasts… Y’all – can someone get me a fan.

Still figuring out how I got through 13 months without Game of Thrones because the 6 days between episodes tears me apart. Who else is a Game of Thrones fan out there??

A Song of Ice and Fire

Having to wait an extra 3 months for my favorite show on the planet to start has been brutalI had forgotten what to do with my Sunday evenings for a while and the months of April and May just didn’t feel the same. We all wanted to see where this story goes and I don’t know about any other Game of Throne fan out there –  but I kinda feel exhausted from all of the excitement!

I woke up yesterday feeling overwhelmingly enthusiastic which led me to a GOT inspired look particularly because I’d been wanting to use my new Urban Decay Naked Heat palette – what better way to pay homage to the rightful ruler of the 7 kingdoms than using a palette that could reference the chick who was reborn from a fire wreckage and ashes like a freaking Phoenix? I also used a pigment from My Beauty Bar called Temptress – a pretty rusty red for a slight reference to the Red Witch.

Season 6 left off without much of a cliffhanger so I’d spent the last 3 weeks talking about the anticipated premier with any GOT fan I could find. We left off seeing Khaleesi sailing across the Narrow Sea, John Snow back at Winterfell with Sansa and the Starks have regained foothold on their childhood home and that crazy b**** Cersei has crowned herself Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in light of her youngest son’s suicide. As with any amazing show, the writers typically know how to keep you going, but sometimes the writers really piss you off and take the opportunity to make the very first episode infuriatingly random. Although not much happened in this season premier – I LOVED it. It wasn’t exactly jam packed with action, but I think after 6 seasons, the viewer is always anticipating something. “Is my favorite character going to die right now? What sort of trouble is this person going to be in now? Will they get out of it?”… etc. I tend to watch the entire episode with a sense of suspense anyway. Even though nothing to allude to the outcome of this season revealed itself in the first 60 minutes of Season 7, I have mostly good things to say about it :

  • I really like how the season started with less addressed story lines – Arya is making her way back to King’s Landing to kill Cersei but stopped in the Riverlands for a brief visit and Bran has finally made it to the Wall
  • John Snow and his army in the North are preparing to defend against the coming winter, but have forgotten about the crazy ass B in the south
  • Cersei, as maniacal as ever, if not more – considers everyone around her a traitor yet she still thinks the iron throne belongs to her (I’m hoping that this means she’s weakened and that Arya or Jaime kills her offfff!! This is wishful thinking though – the writers know everyone wants her dead… they could use this as an opportunity to troll us all)
  • The Hound has found himself with the motley Lord of Light crew but has he come to the light after seeing icy visions in the flames?
  • Sam’s journey to become Grand Maester was REALLY creative on the director’s part – they showed us a glimpse into his daily life of cleaning chamber pots and gagging from the horrendous odors to serving and eating slosh that looked pretty similar to aforementioned contents, to studying and working in the most beautiful library I’ve ever seen and turned his daily grind into a really interesting cacophony.
    •  my FAVORITE part of this entire episode was when Sam was helping the Grand Maester perform an autopsy (I’m assuming it was an autopsy at least..), he asks for permission to the restricted area of the library for more research on the White Walkers because he’s seen them. The Grand Maester assures him that yes, it feels like the world is ending, but mankind has survived many wars and many winters and we will this time too. It was such a CURRENT and modern juxtaposition of respecting your elders who don’t see issues being as grave as they are in comparison to the youth who are seeing the consequences of our actions and what there is to come. Good job, writers!
  • Last, Daenerys has made it to Blackwater Bay and has finally made it to Dragonstone 😱😱😱🐉🐲
  • Also – ED SHEERAN?!?!?!

Although nothing exciting, in terms of action, happened in this first episode – which honestly, I’m thankful for – the first episode calmly (except for when the King of the Friendzone sticks his stoney arm out to Sam asking if the Dragon Queen has made it – I actually screamed) lays the stories out for the viewer leaving me WANTING SO MUCH MORE! I’ve been waiting months for this new season, but I don’t know how I will be able to survive the 6 days between each episode.

Seven Blessings!

Houston Date Night – BAE😍sball

Who here really enjoys sports?

Good! I’m glad! That makes one of us.

I’m not really a sportsing kinda gal. I sure as hell never played any myself. I’m not athletic in terms of contact sports, but we can definitely choreograph something and grand jete all day if you’d like? Growing up, my dad never really played or watched anything except for soccer which I guess never quite exposed me into this grand love of sports that most American children seem to have. Plus, he’s always had some really colorful words about American sports and especially about the Houston sports teams. But he’s not even from around here, so I’ve never taken him too seriously.

I think organized sports are great for team building when you’re in your young formative ages, and when the athletes really play for the love of the sport. However, fast forward to the major leagues and after years of studying & keeping up with socioeconomic issues and trends across the globe, I find out how much these players’ contracts are to join the majors – $78 million, $170 MILLION – and I can’t help but think of all the children especially that could be using that money. I find it stingy and selfish. Sure these athletes use it sometimes for charities and events and give back to their communities sometimes… but it’s not like they’re living in small apartments, driving Hondas and staying in on the weekends drinking boxed wine?

But I digress!!

I can’t deny how much fun a night out to go watch a sports game is. And really, it’s one of my FAVORITE date nights! Even if you’re not the biggest sports fan, if you look at a sports game like a choreographed dance, you really have it all right at your finger tips – dinner and a show! Even better – most stadiums tend to be in the heart of the city or the property around it is a land mine of cool happenings so that patrons of the sporting event can continue their fun (and buzz) elsewhere close-by!

You don’t necessarily even have to wear a sports jersey to a sporting event – especially when you only feel lukewarm about those who are playing! I like to wear the team colors and glam it up slightly with a nice pair of sandals or a pair of statement earrings and always remember to wear comfortable shoes. Stadiums are LARGE and in Houston – you’re probably parking a couple blocks away!

Friday nights are the best nights to go, next to dollar hot dog nights on Wednesday, for their firework show immediately following the game – win or lose! Minute Maid Park – the home of the Astros – has an open roof stadium, but since it’s so damn hot here it’s closed most of the time. But it opens wide to expose the sky & ensuing pyro show on Friday nights after the end of the 9th inning. Their firework shows aren’t like, the best synced with their music most of the time, but who doesn’t like pyrotechnics regardless if it’s synced up right to a stellar soundtrack. (This show pictured above was my favorite – Game of Thrones themed!!! *geeks out*)

Post game, head down to Main Street and beyond into the heart of the city for a drink or two at the bars riddled downtown for your taking. The walk there is half the fun, and if you leave during the pyro show, your walk is accompanied by 1. less people and 2. fireworks!! Que romantico!! But also, downtown has so many gems tucked away in places you can’t see unless you truly look for them. And it’s downtown Houston, y’all – be aware of your surroundings. Look up – and you’ll find this hilarious street lamp flag paying homage to Houston rapper, Fat Pat. Look side to side and you’ll find beautiful wall murals.

Turn your date night into an opportunity to date and explore your city. And if you’re ever in Houston – turn it into an opportunity to explore all she has to offer.
