Makeup artist, blogger, R+F Consultant, Account Manager at one of the largest Insurance Brokerages in the world… but one of my favorite (quasi) professional titles is UST Alumna! I didn’t always feel this way though, because my dream school was University of Texas in Austin. As a young girl growing up in Cypress, TX – a suburb of Houston – I wanted to explore a brand new city for 4 years! But God had other plans for me. And I’m so happy I had the opportunity to live, explore & study in one of the best cities in this country.

I could make this post about how Texas (and specifically Houston) is the best place to live, work, and study, but I pretty much summed that up in this post here. Instead, it’s about how many opportunities came from taking a chance on a small university right in my own backyard.

UST is an opportunity to “Be Your Bold Self” – a slogan that encompasses the core of what the University of St. Thomas has to offer. College is an experience where you find out more about yourself and uncovering who you’ve been all along! UST incorporates academics with other fundamental parts of learning like the arts, culture, diversity and even faith to develop on the skills you already have and the person you already are!

UST is an opportunity to explore one of the most diverse cities in the world – Located in the heart of Montrose, you are situated within minutes of anything you could think of. Downtown, Discovery Green, museums, parks, the largest and most renowned Medical Center in the world, shopping centers, restaurants (name a food, any food… you’re within 15 minutes of anything you want!), and bars!

UST is an opportunity to learn how to keep yourself accountable by working closely together with a small team – because when you enter the workforce, you’re not in a large auditorium with hundreds of your colleagues. You work closely with your peers and your boss to learn and collaborate. My largest class, except for one rare, auditorium style class I had Freshman year, was about 25 people. And that was a sophomore English class. Other than that, my classes averaged no more than about 10 students. It was like we were having meetings each class, which is going to prep you for the workforce better than a large auditorium style class where you hope your professor doesn’t realize you missed half the semester.

UST is an opportunity to learn how to live in a REAL working city – how many universities overtake the towns that they’re located in? College towns are friendly to college students… but that ain’t life honey! And I’m sorry to deliver this message, but you will not be a young, dumb college student forever. Majority of the students that attend UST commute (please don’t get me started on the availability and selection of student housing at UST, not all schools are perfect…), learning to sit in morning and evening rush hours is necessary and incredibly beneficial to know before the rude awakening of joining the workforce post graduation. Studying in Houston means you take your classes and focus on your subjects for that semester, but all the while, you get to observe and absorb what the next chapter will be like.

There’s so much more to life than the college that you attended. In a fast changing world, an education is VERY important, but your diploma doesn’t define your very being. I had some doubts in my first couple of semesters, if I made the right choice by going to and staying at the University of St. Thomas instead of transferring to my “dream school”. Sometimes (when I sit in traffic) I daydream about how different my life would’ve been, and then I think about how I would have never lived my life now any differently! I’m a University of St. Thomas alumni, but I’m also a hoUSTon alumni.

If you’re a hoUSTon alumni too, there are so many ways to give back to the school that has taught us so much. This year’s UST Rocks my Socks campaign brought us so much closer to the alumni participation goal and is a great way to give to the next wave of those wanting to become Celt Alumni! To find out more information on this campaign and other Alumni events to score some really cool Celt swag, visit the UST Alumni page (here!) or follow them on Instagram!

Once upon a time, not a long while ago, bachelor and bachelorette parties were simple, yet very festive and celebratory affairs, where a young, soon-to-be married couple would have “one last night” to be wild and free with some of their best friends before the impending incarceration in which we call marriage. (just kidding, I don’t think that way!) It used to be a night before or a couple nights before the actual wedding, and didn’t really consist of too much other than maybe dinner and drinks with your girlfriends, and perhaps a male stripper if you were on the wilder side… Then millennials started getting engaged and married and it turned into a weekend get-away with your closest gal-pals to get really wild. (I blame Vegas for this)

Now don’t get me wrong – AT ALL – I ABSOLUTELY adore a destination bachelorette party! But sometimes, it just doesn’t fit in someone’s schedule or perhaps even a budget! So when my cousin asked me to be one of her koumbares and plan her bachelorette party, she was very carefree & go with the flow, “I don’t mind at all what we do or where we go, here’s who I’d like to attend, knock yourself out…” the only thing was that between moving across the country in July to be with her Sailor, having a new work schedule and coming back and forth for dress fittings and wedding preparations… well time was a precious commodity.

Houston isn’t exactly a city one comes to to vacation. We’re a commercial city, people come here to work! But we know how to have a d*mn good time!

There are only a few things that one must truly need to successfully pull off a bachelorette party and that’s :

  • love
  • laughter

(lol, jk… but actually)

  • rest
  • relaxation
  • food
  • alcohol
  • good friends

Luckily in the Bayou City, the temperature rarely falls below 85 F well into mid October, so a Labor Day staycation was the perfect time to lay by the pool since that’s all anyone wants to do anyway!

Literally the Best Pool in the Nation, y’all!

Right in the center of downtown, is a little modern, urban oasis, with a Texas shaped pool, a pool that looks over Discovery Green, goddess treatment and a stellar spa (I highly recommend the massage!) – this is the place to hang out for the day or overnight. There are multiple hotels in Houston that would offer the same, luxurious experience, such as the Houstonian, but I decided that the Marriott Marquis would be great for a recently relocated Texan!

That evening, we went back to my house, which is close to a very popular nightlife district, to enjoy a rather naughty time learning about fun toys and being served by a handsome BUTTler. Decorating and party favors don’t have to be expensive, and you can find lots of really great and affordable things on Amazon!

Then we went out for a traditional bachelorette bar-hopping experience! (only thing is that we didn’t get out of the house til midnight, so we only stayed at one bar… haha!)

Brunch, which is always a great idea, can only be elevated by an accompanying performance! Houston now is home to a Hamburger Mary’s, the Original drag brunch! And let me tell you something, honey… Houston Queens can SERVE! On top of that, the food is GREAT!! (as are the Bloody Mary’s) As well as being a fun experience, it’s a great place to go with a group of friends.

Really wished I could’ve gotten better pics of the show oh.. & the food!!

I suppose Houston isn’t the first stop I’d consider for a destination anything, but there are fun things to do in every corner, which only a true Houstonian can truly appreciate. And besides, who doesn’t like a spa day and some time out by the pool accompanied by a fruity drink?

There are plenty of places to play here, my sweet bachelorettes (and any Maids of Honor or Bridesmaids who are currently stressing over where, what, how and when to plan a bachelorette party your best gal pal would love). Throwing a Bachelorette Party in your own town should be an easy job, let me know other ideas and suggestions! 🙂

July 13th only comes around once a year, but for those of us here in the Bayou City, every day is 713 day.

In case you have no earthly idea what July 13th and 713 have to with each other besides coinciding numbers, 713 is the most recognized and oldest area code for the greater Houston area. There are others, like 281 and 832, but February doesn’t have 81 days, nor does August have 32. So the OG gets to represent this local little holiday in all its glory.

It doesn’t hurt that Queen Beyonce herself hails from this modest city of 2.3 million people, only the 4th largest city in the U.S., and reps it every chance she gets, along with the likes of other rappers & artists like Drake (who’s actually from Toronto, but I’ll let my Champagne Papi shout out H-Town anytime he wants!). Now you can imagine if someone who’s “never home but always reppin'” is obsessed with this city, those of us who live here full time, have nothing but MAD LOVE for this muggy, hot, traffic hell-hole, flatter than a “booty-do” metropolis.

So why wait for July when you can celebrate and rep Houston all day, every day!?

Best way to do so –  getting your hands on some locally sourced threads so that you can wear your pride everywhere for everyone to see!

As a fairly avid advocate for shopping local, the Heights, Montrose/Westheimer and Memorial areas are great places to find locally owned boutiques with some pretty awesome pieces for showing off your Space City spirit. The tee shown above – which is EVERYTHING, btw – along with the HOU hats (available in 4 different colors, and can be found online here) are from Emerson Rose, with 2 locations in the city and PLENTY of super adorable Texas and Houston shirts, hats, and even bandanas! Or maybe you’re new to the city and having Houston scrawled across your chest or forehead isn’t something you’re ready to commit to. With the statement earring/jewelry trend in no hurry to leave, finding orange colored accessories is a relatively easy feat. Unless orange is your favorite color, in which case if you’re like me orange is anything but, you’re probably thinking, why in the good Lord’s name would I buy bright AF orange earrings, girl?! Well, in case you live under a rock, the Astros are the 2017 World Series Champs! Also, in which case you’re like me and could give 3 and a half cares about sports, this refers to baseball. And orange is basically like, their team color! OH and Whataburger! It’s Team Whataburger’s colors as well.

Actually… I might go put on these earrings from Bauble Bar (this style is no longer available, but similar ones here) and hit up Whataburger for a late night Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit!!

If nothing else – pop on a vibrant purple lipstick. Why purple? Made popular by the Houston rap community, mixing prescription grade cough syrup with Sprite and a Jolly Rancher yields a [supposedly] yummy, intoxicating, and purplish concoction often referred to as Purple Drank (or Purple Sprite). In addition to sizzurp, Houston is also well known for candy paint

Other ways to stay reppin’ :

  • drink Houston brewed beers at one of the many local breweries like Karbach, 8th Wonder, or Saint Arnold
  • do a Houston Mural tour
  • indulge in Houston’s mega-diverse foods
  • get cultured at Houston’s expansive museum and theater districts
  • sit in an hour and a half (at least) of traffic during rush hour
  • take a walk [or a jog for those brave enough to take the heat] along Memorial Park or Buffalo Bayou

It’s an H-Town Thing

So you don’t have a Valentine this year, boo freaking hoo!

If you’re under the age of 22, I can see how not having someone to buy you a large teddy bear & big balloon can sorta suck, but after 28 years of life, Valentine’s Day isn’t all its cracked up to be even when you’re boo’d up.

This year, I’m flying sola and loving it. There’s no pressure to partake in the cheesiness of it all, although I am wearing pink right now – but I would’ve worn pink or red regardless of the holiday, okay?! However, I understand how this holiday brings awareness to how “single” one is, has been, or can be and I comprehend the anxiety of it all, especially at my age –

OMG I’M SINGLE!!!

WHY DOESN’T ANYONE LOVE ME?

I’M GOING TO DIE ALONE AND ALL MY CATS ARE GOING TO DEVOUR MY FACE!

But then I pulled myself together, and compiled a list of 10 reasons why I will enjoy my singleness this Valentine’s Day!

This year’s holiday season has been quite the test for me. There’s been a lot of changes and a lot more to come, but I’ve been able to enjoy it as much as possible because come 2018 – there are plenty of amazing things in store!
