So… I’m starting to feel a little distressed…

I got an email from Old Navy of things I might like, featuring polos and khaki shorts. As in like, school uniforms!!

Then… it’s Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, my favorite local boutiques are starting to bring in their fall inventory and I’m like, but WAIT!! Where the &#%! does summer think it’s going?! It just got here!

The start of spring honestly doesn’t even feel quite that long ago, yet here we are! In fact, the other day I had a friend over for dinner and referred to the end of April as “oh… like a month or so ago…” while telling a story, not even realizing that in fact it’s been THREE months; I mean, we’re already at the decrescendo-ing part of this month. The next thing you know, it’s August! Which is basically the Sunday of the summer months.

With the end of summer quickly approaching, I’m only a little sad though, because honestly, I’m a fall baby and this heat is just too, too much. Once we get into the last third of the year, especially in Houston, the weather is astronomically more bearable than it is during the “June, July, August” quarter of the year; it really opens up a larger variety of things you can do outside! (Okay, you can literally do anything outside, during any sort of weather, but when the temperatures are hovering around 100F with an index of about 115F, well… you don’t really quite want to sit on a patio, now do you?)

I may be partial to one month of the year in particular, but there’s one other time that is quite nice here in Houston, and that’s the sweet, sweet, Springtime months of March, April, May, which 2018 had some AWESOME things for me here in these few months. 2018 was the year of the Music Festival; something that I had practically written myself off as too old for –  I used to go to raves all the time back in college during a particularly rambunctious time of my life, but I always had SO MUCH FUN!!! However, going to In Bloom Fest here in Houston and Coachella in Indio, CA and seeing all of the kids there in the median age of 23, and judging by the way my body felt after both of these parties, yeah, I did feel old. But I still had SO MUCH FUN!!!

Being the makeup junkie that I am, the best part of a musical festival is the crazy, eclectic, fun makeup looks that you can create and still look like a(n almost) totally normal person in public. This one in particular is so bright yet subtle at the same time, it’s perfect for anytime of the season.

Spring/Summer 2018 has been a fun time for me, but I’m ready for the temps to drop a little.

Although, I hate how “early” the fall starts here, especially in a part of the country that doesn’t feel fall weather until well into the month of October, if that. Even though retailers are shoving fall everything down our throats, which means pumpkin spice EVERYTHING is right around the corner, enjoy the last, sweet fleeting moments of the summer!

Missed out on the Milani sale earlier this month? Don’t fret, because this brand is as amazing and affordable as they come.

Little else excites me more than a GOOD, QUALITY, and AFFORDABLE makeup brand. I can find the need to buy makeup anywhere I’m at – whether it’s Walgreens or Nordstrom, if lost, you can pretty much 98% of the time find me in the cosmetics department. But little else disappoints me more than drugstore beauty duds. Those eyeshadow palettes that look so pretty in pan, then blend terribly; those lipsticks that feel more like slippery paint than a luscious lip color; those foundations that oxidize and splotch after 2-3 hours of wear.. the list of drugstore beauty finds gone wrong can go on.

But then there are the classics, that though they let you down once in a while, for the most part always seem to come in so clutch!

Milani has been around for a WHILE. I think their Baked Blush was one of my very first purchases from them after being recommended by a highly reputable Youtube guru (I’m thinking it might’ve been Marlena of MakeupGeek?). But since then had only ventured out of my comfort zone with the brand once or twice, trying out their pencil & liquid eyeliner, a couple of their lipsticks and glosses. But with NYX dominating the affordable/drugstore makeup world, Milani has been upping their game. So over this past summer, I accumulated a handful of their other products to see if they live up to their hype..

[I’m contemplating doing full reviews on the foundation and the lipsticks, if interested – please leave a comment!]
  • The first purchase was the Conceal + Perfect 2 in 1 Foundation + Concealer; a friend of mine had raved about it, and a foundation that cuts out a step in the glam process is what I’m all about! I liked it so much, I decided to continue expanding my collection
  • Next came the highlighters – another friend of mine used one of these highlighters on her daughter. I halfway blinded myself by looking too directly at the glow. For $11, I had to try these out. While at Walgreens though, I noticed this really pretty warm blush palette, so I threw that in my basket as well. The collection needed to keep growing!
  • Liquid lipsticks are my jam! They’re easy to apply, have longer staying power on average over a regular stick, and the colors come off much more vibrant. Since bright colored liquid lipsticks can sometimes have a splotchy formula, I didn’t want to risk too much (even though these are only $9), so I opted for 2 neutral colors
  • THEN I noticed they had METALLIC LIQUID LIPSTICKS!! *swoon* Considering I had already grabbed 2 neutral colors in their regular matte liquid lipstick formula, and I was so impressed by the wear, color pay off and formula; I decided to bet on a richer, brighter color like the one in the lower left corner in the picture above
  • The products listed above were so amazing, I decided to continue branching and grabbing a concealer/highlighter & their eyeshadow primer. After a couple uses, do I think they’re life-changing and revolutionary?? Not exactly, but for their price range, they are ROCKSTARS!

Milani products used as pictured above : Conceal + Perfect 2 in 1 Foundation + Concealer in Golden Tan, Strobelight Instant Glow Powder in Sunglow & Color Harmony Blush Palette in Berry Rays

Milani products used as pictured above : Conceal + Perfect 2 in 1 Foundation + Concealer in Golden Tan, Retouch + Erase Light-Lifting Concealer in Light, & Strobelight Instant Glow Powder in Dayglow

Milani product used NOT pictured above : Amore Matte Lip Creme in Obsession

  • Foundation – wears very well and covers EVERYTHING. Redness, blemishes, discoloration – this foundation + concealer has got you covered… literally. It’s very thick, but doesn’t feel like a mask. Although, granted, it doesn’t feel light/airy either.
  • Highlighter – BEAUTIFUL!!! Probably my favorite Milani purchase so far. The pigmentation is incredible alone, but adding a little Fix + to your brush at application will help you be seen from outer space.
  • Blush – what can I say? Milani blushes are some of my all-time favorite, affordable cheek colors. I like these “sun-dial” type blushes in particular because the colors work together to give a gorgeous wash instead of “in-your-face”, loud color. I also think that the formula for this blush in particular helps to achieve the light “flushed” cheek look as well since the product isn’t too powdery, lessening the chance for user error
  • Retouch + Erase Light-Lifting concealer was strange. I found the formula and color to be GREAT! It blended underneath my eye area seamlessly, although I did have to work it a little; but what bugged me the most was the applicator… it was a sponge with a hole in the middle where the product dispenses from. The sponge was a little too hard to use for blending in, so I just applied the product straight to the areas I needed and blended it in with a separate Beauty Blender.
  • BUT THIS LIP COLOR THOUGH!!! I inadvertently found my lip color for this coming fall season. And for $9, this puppy stayed on for about 5 hours, and lasted through a traditional, greasy, messy Sunday-night football dinner of sliders and jalapeno poppers without smudging too much or giving that dreaded chola lip. It’s also a fairly moisturizing formula, so my lips didn’t appear cracked but the lipstick didn’t adhere to my cups or utensils too much either!

This tried and true brand is expanding their presence in the makeup world, and their research & development team is making sure they’re not getting left behind in the dust. Their products are amazing, as they’ve pretty much always been. If you’re looking to try out new makeup products, Milani is the way to go as their products are affordable, good quality and will keep you on trend.

I think the best way to complete your All-American look, is to reach for a fire engine red lipstick.

I know that the search for one is pretty daunting on your own, so here are a few of my favorites:

Clockwise from the top || MAC “Feel So Grand”; Anastasia Beverly Hills “American Doll”; Coloured Raine “Cherry Blossom”; Two Faced “Lady Balls”; MAC “Ruby Woo”

  • MAC “Feel So Grand” – liquid lipsticks are my jam and when MAC came out with their own, I had to give them a try. MAC was one of the first companies to come out with stand-out, stellar reds, so I knew this one would be good. It’s a bright red, not too blue not too orange, and very long wearing. Be sure to exfoliate and moisturize before hand because this formula is pretty drying. Find it here
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills “American Doll” – the name alone could be why I picked this color – but this truly is one of my favorite red lipsticks and I think the Anastasia Beverly Hills formula and their applicator make her line of liquid lipsticks my ultimate liquid lipstick crack. It’s a deep, but bright blue-red with a smooth even formula that’s long-wearing. Find it here
  • Coloured Raine “Cherry Blossom” – THIS RED Y’ALL!!! It’s a beautiful deep cherry red color that’s perfect for any skin type, which is exactly what the founder of this company wanted, and she hit the blue-based red color and the longwearing, non-drying formula right on the head. Find it here
  • Two Faced “Lady Balls” – It’s always a little scary when one of your favorite makeup brands jumps on a makeup trend bandwagon, because you hope that their formula doesn’t suck and make you regret your purchase. But Two Faced did a GREAT job on their liquid lipsticks, and their red is a classic true matte red. This formula is a smidge drying, so remember to exfoliate and lightly moisturize before applying. Find Lady Balls here
  • MAC “Ruby Woo” – Last but not least, an oldie but a goodie – the OG CLASSIC RED LIPSTICK – Ruby Woo by MAC. This isn’t a liquid lipstick, this is your classic retro matte MAC formula, it’s pretty drying and I highly recommend a lip pencil to line your lips first (like Brick or Cherry by MAC) to enhance the shape and give the color a nice outline of where to go, but this color is highly universal and looks beautiful on every skin tone I’ve seen it on. Find it here

Not everyone is comfortable with a red lip, but I say push past your comfort zones and never give up on finding the right red shade for you, because nothing can make you feel like a boss a$$ b!tch like beautifully painted red lips.

MAKKEEUUPP

Nothing like coming home to this box on your doorstep

I haven’t done a Sephora haul since their VIB Rouge sale back at the end of April. APRIL, y’all! I’m trying to be less of a spender these days. Granted, I’m still picking up a few pieces here and there. But it’s much less like before where I’d dump large sums of money on paints and powders that I put on my face only to wash off a few hours later.

I tried to avoid the VIB Rouge sale, but seeing as it only comes twice a year, I had to take a gander on their website – you know, just to see if they had anything that I might need… or want? Then one thing led to another..

…I really need to work on my self control…

It all started after I read about this RMS Beauty Champagne Rosé Luminizer – I like Champagne, I like Rosé, and I like cream highlighters. That, and it’s positive as well as credible review from Popsugar Beauty, I added it to cart.

Next I needed a good powder for my kit. I swear by this powder – it’s great for the humid, Houston heat; it’s lightweight yet it sets creams very well; and it’s a decent price (compared to my other FAVORITE – Chanel translucent powder). When I clicked on this product on the site, I learned that Laura Mercier added a Translucent Medium Deep powder recently for my rich complexion ladies. So of course I got both for my kit. Seeing as this was for business reasons, I felt it was pretty justified.

The whole point of a sale, especially the VIB Rouge sale, is to take that discount and use that towards new products you haven’t tried before! I’d been eyeing the KVD Tattoo Liner in Trooper for ages, but with mixed reviews I had always neglected to try it out. But this was my chance! *add to cart* I’ve been obsessing over the Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paints. They have an amazing formula that isn’t too terribly dry, but stays really well, and with their large array of nude/neutral colors, I had to try a couple more. *add to cart*

Another point to the whole VIB Rouge sale is to try purchasing products that maybe you didn’t like before but could like now?? This time last year, I finally decided to try the cult favorite MUFE HD Foundation. At that time, I had terrible acne still. Seeing as this foundation is a light to medium coverage with a natural/almost dewy finish, this did nothing for my acne prone, acne scarred & oily skin. But after having used the amazing Rodan + Fields Unblemish regimen for about 8 months, my skin had improved dramatically and since this guy was on sale – *add to cart*. (update – I LOVE it!)

Last but definitely not least – I’d been eyeing these Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors since last year but just never got it. For the price – $44, I wasn’t quite sure how ready I was to commit to yet another cream highlighter. But it was the VIB Rouge sale!!! You can never have too many cream highlighters! *add to cart*

I’m working on my willpower!! When was your last large haul? Are you guys loving the products from your Spring Sephora VIB Rouge Sale hauls?
