I feel like Independence Day is the pinnacle holiday of the summer. You see, Memorial Day kick starts the summer season at the end of May; and Labor Day concludes the festivities at the start of September… and in between it all is the very fun and patriotic themed 4th of July!!

Which.. have you ever gotten sort of tongue tied trying to wish someone a good holiday? “Have a good fourth of Indpenden… er… grool.”

Either way, as a kid, I didn’t particularly like the 4th of July – it was hot, no one got presents, and I didn’t like the color scheme… it’s not very flattering for my skin tone. But now that I’m older, when you are given a reason to celebrate and get a day off – you sure as hell get excited about it & find some trendy, chic ways to wear that red, white and blue, stars and stripes and anything and everything else that will make you look patriotic AF!

Easiest way – simply incorporate the colors, Red, White and Blue into your accessories. Meaning busting out a pretty red nail polish like Ruby Ruby by Sinful Colors (even better – it’s a steal at $1.99!) or Blanc by Essie like pictured above. Or even easier is popping on a bright, ruby red lipstick. I really feel like a red lipstick not only looks classic, but reminds me of Old Hollywood Glamour, which guys – Hollywood is SO Americana! Try this one by Anastasia Beverly Hills – American Doll. With the reflective lens trend still sticking around, a bright blue reflective lens like these by Quay  (similar ones linked) can complete your All American Girl look.

Next, hop on over to Old Navy or Target. GUARANTEED to find some nationalistic threads.

Hat from Old Navy, swimsuit top – reversible, by the way!! – from Target. Bought an oversized men’s cotton button up from a thrift store for $3 as a cover up. God Bless America!

If being over the top patriotic is not your thing, opt for the following things :

  • red stripes
  • blue stripes
  • red accents
  • blue accents
  • white accents
  • denim
  • white sneakers
  • nude, beige or even gold shoes, bags, jewelry, belts, etc

Earrings – Free People | Top – Zara | Skirt – Gap | Bag – Amazon Fashion | Shoes – Target

Dress – Stitch Fix | Bag – Amazon Fashion | Shoes – Steve Madden

I can’t wait to party like it’s 1776! Hope everyone has a safe and happy Independence Day!

Who here really enjoys sports?

Good! I’m glad! That makes one of us.

I’m not really a sportsing kinda gal. I sure as hell never played any myself. I’m not athletic in terms of contact sports, but we can definitely choreograph something and grand jete all day if you’d like? Growing up, my dad never really played or watched anything except for soccer which I guess never quite exposed me into this grand love of sports that most American children seem to have. Plus, he’s always had some really colorful words about American sports and especially about the Houston sports teams. But he’s not even from around here, so I’ve never taken him too seriously.

I think organized sports are great for team building when you’re in your young formative ages, and when the athletes really play for the love of the sport. However, fast forward to the major leagues and after years of studying & keeping up with socioeconomic issues and trends across the globe, I find out how much these players’ contracts are to join the majors – $78 million, $170 MILLION – and I can’t help but think of all the children especially that could be using that money. I find it stingy and selfish. Sure these athletes use it sometimes for charities and events and give back to their communities sometimes… but it’s not like they’re living in small apartments, driving Hondas and staying in on the weekends drinking boxed wine?

But I digress!!

I can’t deny how much fun a night out to go watch a sports game is. And really, it’s one of my FAVORITE date nights! Even if you’re not the biggest sports fan, if you look at a sports game like a choreographed dance, you really have it all right at your finger tips – dinner and a show! Even better – most stadiums tend to be in the heart of the city or the property around it is a land mine of cool happenings so that patrons of the sporting event can continue their fun (and buzz) elsewhere close-by!

You don’t necessarily even have to wear a sports jersey to a sporting event – especially when you only feel lukewarm about those who are playing! I like to wear the team colors and glam it up slightly with a nice pair of sandals or a pair of statement earrings and always remember to wear comfortable shoes. Stadiums are LARGE and in Houston – you’re probably parking a couple blocks away!

Friday nights are the best nights to go, next to dollar hot dog nights on Wednesday, for their firework show immediately following the game – win or lose! Minute Maid Park – the home of the Astros – has an open roof stadium, but since it’s so damn hot here it’s closed most of the time. But it opens wide to expose the sky & ensuing pyro show on Friday nights after the end of the 9th inning. Their firework shows aren’t like, the best synced with their music most of the time, but who doesn’t like pyrotechnics regardless if it’s synced up right to a stellar soundtrack. (This show pictured above was my favorite – Game of Thrones themed!!! *geeks out*)

Post game, head down to Main Street and beyond into the heart of the city for a drink or two at the bars riddled downtown for your taking. The walk there is half the fun, and if you leave during the pyro show, your walk is accompanied by 1. less people and 2. fireworks!! Que romantico!! But also, downtown has so many gems tucked away in places you can’t see unless you truly look for them. And it’s downtown Houston, y’all – be aware of your surroundings. Look up – and you’ll find this hilarious street lamp flag paying homage to Houston rapper, Fat Pat. Look side to side and you’ll find beautiful wall murals.

Turn your date night into an opportunity to date and explore your city. And if you’re ever in Houston – turn it into an opportunity to explore all she has to offer.

Okay Houstonians, I hope you’re enjoying the last of these cool mornings and warm afternoon days, because we know the devil weather is right around the corner.

For myself, this is the only time that I particularly enjoy the Texas summer – these random spurts of agreeable weather where the humidity is lower than usual, the mornings are cool enough for a jog without uncontrollable sweating til at least 10:30 a.m.,the afternoons and early evenings are more than perfect for happy hours on the patio and nighttime feels incredible enough for a stroll in the park.

If you haven’t been in Houston long, it’s hard to decipher what you should wear during this time.

Top : Lulus || Shorts : Gap || Shoes : Monastiraki, Athens, Greece

A simple rule of thumb for any locale during Spring or Fall, where you’re not sure of how cool the mornings will be nor how hot the afternoons will be is to LAYER! If I’m not in the layering mood – I try to keep my outfits balanced like this one here. When the temperatures are up and down, keep something covered and show a little something else. This way, you’re not too hot when the sun really starts warming up and you’re not too cold when the sun starts going down. Also try to keep your fabrics breathable, it’s OKAY to wear long sleeves in late Spring/early summer as long as your fabrics are right.

Summer Don’t : Wool/Cashmere || Summer Do : COTTON!

Choker : Aldo Shoes

When the humidity is low, a WHOLE world of hair styles is opened up – for me, this means it’s actually worth taking heat tools to my hair without worrying about a frizz-attack. However, in this case, I piled my mane on top of my head for a top knot, free-ing my shoulders to the sun!

This is one of my FAVORITE pair of sandals. They’re platform, have a touch of espadrille style in one of the layers of the platform, I’m obsessed with the braided detail across the top of the foot, and they tie up, making them part of the gladiator family. Something about gladiator sandals scream summer and continues to give a warm-weather appropriate feel to the long sleeve top.

Enjoy the last mild days of the late Spring! Because – Brace yourselves, Summer is coming!

I don’t do sports, I don’t know sports, I don’t understand sports… but I’ll watch ’em!
I wouldn’t say I’m unathletic – I enjoy working out, I lift weights, I’m an avid yogini, and I run. However, throw in some hand-eye coordination challenges plus any sort of contact and you’ve already lost me.

Sports isn’t something I grew up on. My dad played football (or what Americans like to refer as soccer) from when he was a kid and played in a league here in the States when I was very young. He enjoys watching a good match from time to time, which I’ve inherited as well. But weekends in the fall have always been reserved for hunting versus learning stats for different players and teams.

When it comes to Super Bowl though, I’ll make a day of it. Mostly because it’s a good reason to whip up some game day eats, have some brews and throw a rad party, and only partly for the game. And this year it was right in my backyard!

Now, when it comes to hype, 9 times out of 10 I’m gonna turn my head the other way, and this was one of those 9 times. My city was poppin’ this weekend on a scale reserved only for events of this caliber. But with that comes droves of people and I decided to stay my happy ass at home rather than fight the traffic. Did I miss out on some things? Maybe… Am I going to lose sleep over it? Nahhh. I just hope the people visiting from out of town got to enjoy this city as much as I do on a day to day basis.

I usually take inspiration for my makeup and outfits from whatever I have planned for the day, and this was no exception. I found this the perfect excuse to mix athleisure (inpsired by the big game) with simple makeup featuring a dramatic lip (inspired by the H-Town baddies).

Lips – Fixed on Drama, MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick

Boxer Braids under a Nike cap

#healthy

Cropped tee – Cotton On; Sweatshirt – Suburban Riot; Leggings – Old Navy; Choker – Forever 21; Hat/Shoes – Nike

Figured I’d bare a little bit of midriff since I won’t be doing it for a while considering the disgusting amount of greasy, calorie-laden foods I consumed during the game.. and today with leftovers.

I did try to be a little healthy by making almond crusted chicken nuggets

Recipe anyone? Served with Sriracha Ranch dip (not pictured)

I tried to stick to healthy options, but had a MAD craving for brownies. Oops! Maybe better luck next year on the healthy options when Super Bowl isn’t in my home town?

BRB – going on a 4 mile run because I probably gained another 5 pounds just thinking of all the food I ate.
