Legit worked pretty much my entire summer.

I started a new job, and unfortunately in America, taking anything longer than a straight week vacation is looked at as shocking, unless there’s “tenure” involved. Which, is understandable, however, we gotta take truly unplugged breaks every once in a while, even if you’re the new kid on the block.

The highlight of my summer was shopping for makeup at the beginning – picking out products that I try to see if they stand the test of time : the hot and humid Houston summers. Brutal.

Starting from the Top, clockwise : Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch setting powder, Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Gel and Brow Wiz, MorrocanOil Treatment, Anastasia Beverly Hills Riviera palette, Huda Beauty Liquid Lipstick
  • Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Powder – that Caribbean honey, Rihanna, knows what it’s like to deal with those sweaty, humid days and nights. This powder is worth the try if you’re worried about your face melting off the moment you walk out the door.
  • ABH Dipbrow Gel – On the fence about this product! Did I love it? No, But would I buy it again? For sure. I like it better than regular brow gel because of the small, tapered applicator and thicker, darker product, but it was kinda gloppy (is this a word?) and doesn’t feel like it brushes as evenly through my brows as the regular ol’ gel. But, boy does it stay ON! Through sweat and… yeah, that’s all I did this summer, but brows never rubbed off.
  • ABH Brow Wiz – Love this product. Will re-buy again and again. I just happened to include it in this early summer’s haul!
  • Moroccan Oil Treatment – The Original Moroccan oil treatment, the brand’s name is literally Moroccanoil. I love this stuff! I use this about every 3 times I wash my hair, and it tames the curls and combats the frizz that I love so much…
  • ABH Riviera Palette – I’m going to be completely honest, I haven’t actually used this palette yet. This is tragic… I know, but maybe I’ll do a post separately for this beautiful summery palette??
  • Huda Beauty Liquid Lipstick – I tried out Sugar Mama and Trophy Wife a while back and Trophy Wife has to be ONE OF MY TIP TOP VERY FAVORITE LIP COLORS EVERRRRRR!!! But it’s dark, reddish mauve makes Trophy Wife perfect for fall, and left me wanting something similar for Spring/Summer. Gossip Girl is described as the perfect everyday pink, and I have to agree with that! It’s got a hint of Barbie while also being normal enough to wear to the office. Cheerleader, “a delicately muted red”?? It was a deep red like lots of other lipsticks in my repertoire, BUT the formula SUCKED! It was watery, slippery and bled once it finally dried. I returned it immediately.

In all, I hardly did ANY painting of the sort this summer. I spent it perfecting my craft of the “quick, looked really pulled together” makeup look. Which I now rock some sort of variation of on the daily for my werkin-woman boss-babe vibes! No complaints there, but I’m ready to get my hands on the Riviera palette and get some COLOR in my life!

PSA : I just got Sephora’s 20% Summer VIB Sale in my emails! Going on from 8/19 – 8/23! Feel free to leave any suggestions for what to get in my upcoming haul!

xoxo,

Maria

Off the top of my head, I could think of 50 things I'd rather be doing than deep cleaning my brushes. It's probably THE bane of my existence but it's a necessary evil. The skin is our largest organ, our first line of defense and the first thing people see – so we gotta protect it! Besides keeping our skin in better shape, clean brushes also makes it easier to blend. I can't lie and say I deep clean them EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK (which is recommended), but I have a handful of brushes so I tend to push off deep cleansing for a hot minute. Eye brushes are especially crucial to clean after/before each use because having product build up is 1. Gross and 2. Can muddy the colors (that means awful blending). To get a marvelous clean without the pruney hands in-between deep cleaning, I'm OBSESSED with the Cinema Secrets Professional Makeup Brush Cleaner. It's easy, quick, incredibly effective and dries super fast. Which I LOVE! I can clean my brushes with this product about 5-10 minutes before sitting at my vanity and they're ready to go. I still love my MAC Brush cleaner as well, but it just takes to long so dry. So I think we know who I feel is the real winner here. (find it in 4 sizes here!)

Ideally, you're looking to deep clean your personal brushes every 1-2 weeks, maybe 3, depending on how often you use them. I know it's such a drag, but this Cinema Secrets brush cleaner is only going to get your brushes so clean. You definitely have to bust out the big guns from time to time.

Things you'll need

  • Soap – you spend money on your brushes, and they're gentle creatures, so straight up dish detergent ain't treating your babies right. I recommend the Beauty Blender brand liquid cleanser (find it here) to be kind to your sensitive bristles and just a TOUCH of a gentle and moisturizing dish soap. I'm sure plenty of my makeup artists are gritting their teeth at this suggestion. But hear me out! Those "tough on grease, not on your hands" commercials are right – they're incredibly moisturizing, but they're heavy duty. I particularly like to add just a small squeeze of dish soap to really help break up stubborn products like foundation, concealers, liquid lipsticks, gel liners and glitters.
  • A plastic bowl or dish – I like to do this step to create my liquid, soapy concoction to dip my brushes in before swirling them around on my hand or mat
  • Brush Cleaning Mat or Glove (*optional) – you don't need this item, but let me tell you – you need it if you want to maintain your sanity while washing your brushes. It makes your life 1000% easier and your hands much less pruney than if you were to not use one. A quick Google search can give you tips on making your own, but shout out to my boo, Anna for hooking yo girl up! (It's a great birthday present, y'all… find it here for only $25!)

Easy as 1,2,3 (4,5,6…)

  1. Pour 1 part dish soap to 3 parts Beauty Blender liquid in your bowl
  2. Wet your brush under warm to luke warm water, careful to JUST run the water on the bristles and not too close to the ferrel (the part where the bristles come out from)
  3. Lightly dip in soap mixture
  4. Gently swirl around in circular motions and back and forth on Sigma Spa mat/glove till suds turn more white than dirty from the makeup
  5. Rinse out soap, again careful to not run water too close to bristles
  6. Holding your brush with bristles facing down, gently squeeze out water making sure all soap is out and that the water runs clear. If not, repeat steps 3-5 til it does
  7. Reshape bristles
  8. Lay flat to dry! – I especially like to lay them flat along my countertop or table top with the bristles hanging slightly off so that the air can circumvent and dry the brush thoroughly from all sides

I like to let them dry overnight so they're ready to go by morning!! This isn't the most glamorous part of makeup, and I wish I could hire a professional makeup washer… but it's like dishes or undies y'all – you gotta clean them to reuse them.

Who's interested in a post about my favorite makeup brush brands? 🤔

Nothing like coming home to this box on your doorstep

I haven’t done a Sephora haul since their VIB Rouge sale back at the end of April. APRIL, y’all! I’m trying to be less of a spender these days. Granted, I’m still picking up a few pieces here and there. But it’s much less like before where I’d dump large sums of money on paints and powders that I put on my face only to wash off a few hours later.

I tried to avoid the VIB Rouge sale, but seeing as it only comes twice a year, I had to take a gander on their website – you know, just to see if they had anything that I might need… or want? Then one thing led to another..

…I really need to work on my self control…

It all started after I read about this RMS Beauty Champagne Rosé Luminizer – I like Champagne, I like Rosé, and I like cream highlighters. That, and it’s positive as well as credible review from Popsugar Beauty, I added it to cart.

Next I needed a good powder for my kit. I swear by this powder – it’s great for the humid, Houston heat; it’s lightweight yet it sets creams very well; and it’s a decent price (compared to my other FAVORITE – Chanel translucent powder). When I clicked on this product on the site, I learned that Laura Mercier added a Translucent Medium Deep powder recently for my rich complexion ladies. So of course I got both for my kit. Seeing as this was for business reasons, I felt it was pretty justified.

The whole point of a sale, especially the VIB Rouge sale, is to take that discount and use that towards new products you haven’t tried before! I’d been eyeing the KVD Tattoo Liner in Trooper for ages, but with mixed reviews I had always neglected to try it out. But this was my chance! *add to cart* I’ve been obsessing over the Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paints. They have an amazing formula that isn’t too terribly dry, but stays really well, and with their large array of nude/neutral colors, I had to try a couple more. *add to cart*

Another point to the whole VIB Rouge sale is to try purchasing products that maybe you didn’t like before but could like now?? This time last year, I finally decided to try the cult favorite MUFE HD Foundation. At that time, I had terrible acne still. Seeing as this foundation is a light to medium coverage with a natural/almost dewy finish, this did nothing for my acne prone, acne scarred & oily skin. But after having used the amazing Rodan + Fields Unblemish regimen for about 8 months, my skin had improved dramatically and since this guy was on sale – *add to cart*. (update – I LOVE it!)

Last but definitely not least – I’d been eyeing these Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors since last year but just never got it. For the price – $44, I wasn’t quite sure how ready I was to commit to yet another cream highlighter. But it was the VIB Rouge sale!!! You can never have too many cream highlighters! *add to cart*

I’m working on my willpower!! When was your last large haul? Are you guys loving the products from your Spring Sephora VIB Rouge Sale hauls?

xoxo
