The Glitter Shadow You Need If You Can’t Find Anything to Wear NYE

My obsession with makeup has it’s perks. I’ve gotten quite good at the art, and if I can’t think of or find anything to wear for a special occasion, I can wear all black and make my makeup the center of attention.

Luxe items like sequins, sparkles, fur and velvet have been widely in trend as of late, but with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I didn’t even think to find something to wear when the clock strikes 12 on December 31st. So when I finally went on the hunt for the perfect New Year’s Eve outfit this past weekend, I was straight out of luck. Lots of things were picked over and I just couldn’t convince myself to buy something I only had lukewarm feelings about just to have an outfit worthy of one night. (is that called adulting??)

So it was time to get creative with the pieces I already have in my closet and bust out the beauty products to turn me into a disco ball! Glitter is my favorite color, but loose glitter is hard to work with, even for a professional like myself! It takes a lot of time and patience, and I unfortunately have to work on December 31st, so time is of the essence to ensure I make it to my party before the ball drops.

Stila launched a product around 2014, a semi-solid glitter product called Foil Finish eyeshadow, and as it’s name suggests, had more of a foil finish than glitter, but was very glittery. But you had to mix it with a mixing medium or apply with your fingers to get the best results which could get a little complicated and messy. Then they got smart and launched their Glitter and Glow eyeshadows in 2017 (which I first tried & featured in this haul here) which is MUCH MORE USER FRIENDLY! And have since launched a much wider array of colors. They retail for $24.00 at Sephora, Ulta and the Stila website.

NYX recently launched their own line of a similar product called Glitter Goals. The NYX version retails for $8 and can be found at most beauty supply stores, NYX store fronts & website, Ulta, and even Target. Both have a doe foot applicator that make it easy to apply straight from the applicator, by using a flat eyeshadow brush (you’ll get optimum results by using a synthetic brush vs natural hair), or with your finger. If you can tell from the photo above, the Stila Glitter and Glow has more of chunky glitter property to the product while the NYX version is more of a foil with a subtle, shimmery glitter.

Both products are very good, if you have the funds to splurge, I highly recommend Stila. But if you’re on a budget, you’ll be just as happy with the NYX version. I find that both products fare better layered on top of another color or base shadow vs on their own as the swatch above shows.

If you’re strapped for time and don’t have any idea of where you’ll find something sparkly to wear in time to ring in the new year, my advice would be to run to your nearest Ulta and grab either of the 2 products from this post. (Ulta always has coupons for “non-prestige” brands like NYX, fyi).

Wishing you all a sparkly, glittery, glamorous and fabulous New Year!

xoxo,
