There’s a lot of mess in this world. We pray for love and peace, but really, it starts from within.

Same goes for when someone feels like they cant find someone for them, or they attract the same dead-end type of relationships.

As Rupaul said it, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna somebody else?”

I’ve often thought about my own love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day. I hate that people who don’t have a Valentine date feel more “aware‘ of their single status. But I love the colors, and I just love the L O V E !

And then I thought, for so long, Valentine’s Day is about telling your crush you like them, or hoping to have that cute guy you keep bumping into at the deli to notice you and finally ask you out! If Valentine’s Day is all about love, why can’t you be your own date? Why can’t it be about loving yourself first?

It’s not about being selfish, because self care and self love, makes you a better person. It makes you a better friend, sister, daughter, companion, mother, aunt, cousin. When you can love yourself, you create the vibe in which you surround yourself.

There are SO many ways that you can treat yourself like the partner you deserve :

  • Take yourself shopping
  • Treat yourself to a glass of bubbly at a swanky downtown bar
  • Draw yourself a bath, add bubbles or milk, honey and rose petals
  • Light some aromatic candles and take a hot, steamy shower
  • Find some really smell-good lotions and serums to apply after your bath
  • Clean Linens
  • WORK OUT! Yoga or a quick meditation. I know it may sound weird, but try it
  • Journal – write down 10 things you like about yourself. Can be as simple and random as, “I like my earlobes” but write 10 things you like about yourself.
  • Put on some makeup, do your hair, and take some selfies. Take at least 20 and find a few that make you feel like a boss babe

So many ways to show yourself love, I don’t even know if I touched the tip of the iceberg.

I cleaned ALL my linens. From my mattress pads, to my sheets, to my quilt, to my throw blankets and sham covers. I got a pretty good work out in. I fed my body well today. I shaved, because I don’t have laser yet :(, exfoliated all over in a hot shower today, used my deep conditioner in my hair, used extra serums and I used my extra moisturizing lotion. I made sure to light some candles and I jotted down a couple things I love about myself. One of which read, “I love that you get so obsessed with memes that you can watch them over and over and still laugh after watching it 18 times.”

Love yourself down to the simplest thing!

This Valentine’s Day, I hope you find some ways to show love to the temple that you live your life in every day.

So you don’t have a Valentine this year, boo freaking hoo!

If you’re under the age of 22, I can see how not having someone to buy you a large teddy bear & big balloon can sorta suck, but after 28 years of life, Valentine’s Day isn’t all its cracked up to be even when you’re boo’d up.

This year, I’m flying sola and loving it. There’s no pressure to partake in the cheesiness of it all, although I am wearing pink right now – but I would’ve worn pink or red regardless of the holiday, okay?! However, I understand how this holiday brings awareness to how “single” one is, has been, or can be and I comprehend the anxiety of it all, especially at my age –

But then I pulled myself together, and compiled a list of 10 reasons why I will enjoy my singleness this Valentine’s Day!

View Post

I hope you took the time to read my last post… but no hard feelings if you didn’t. It was quite lengthy. So lengthy that I myself didn’t even re-read it to ensure there were no typos. (oops. #keepingitreal)

Most of our Sunday Funday Valentine’s Day Date was spent mostly in plush, comfy robes and slippers, but prior to our spa day, I decided to dress up, and dress up festively might, I add for church and brunch!

This Chicwish skirt is probably one of my favorite items in my closet. It’s full. It’s got pink. It’s got reds. It’s floral. Ugh. Swoon. I really wish I could wear it all the time, but I reserve it for particularly special occasions.

I stumbled across Chicwish somehow while on Facebook. By now I’m sure we’re all aware that Facebook and Google and all of the internet is linked for that matter, so when you search for something or browse a page on the internet, the ads that pop up elsewhere pertain to your recent browsing activity. In my case, it’s typically makeup, shoes or clothes. *insert side eye emoji*. I saw this skirt and another featured on their ad and decided to give it a whirl.

Despite the fact that it took almost 4 weeks to receive my order, and upon receiving it, seeing that the labels were in Chinese. I was apprehensive upon opening it, worried that it would be shoddy quality and that I played myself.

Thank goodness I was pleasantly surprised!

More often than not, I try to pair this dress with a simple, white button down shirt to make it less “Valentine’s-y”. But what kind of person would I be to NOT pair this skirt with the brightest, pinkest, most matchy-matchy shirt in my closet for this skirt? The perfect match (see what I did there?? Because… Valentine’s Day)

Maybe you’re not a pink kinda person. And I’m sorry. But the pink/red hues make my heart sing!

Love as sweet as sugar

When Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of a work week (last Tuesday), I think it’s okay to still write about it a week later? Some people celebrate the weekend prior, some people celebrate the weekend following… Besides, all of February is pretty much festive and this post could potentially give someone some major inspo for a cute date day!

But honestly, enough with making excuses for myself on a late post. I actually hate Valentine’s Day. I think it’s silly and tacky and a little overwhelming especially for a made up holiday! If you’re in a relationship, you’re “expected” to get something material for your significant other. If you’re not in a relationship, it can be a damper that you don’t have someone to celebrate it with. Which I think is ridiculous. Here’s my take on the whole thing – if you’re in a relationship, don’t EXPECT anything on Valentine’s Day (or anniversary for that matter.. sometimes dudes forget, aight??). You should have the kind of relationship where you make a big elaborate for your man just because it’s Wednesday (Hump Day! ayyeeeee) and your man should bring you a huge elaborate bouquet of flowers just because it’s Monday and he thought about you on his way home! And if you’re single – boo!! Do not let that get you down! You are fire. YOU are bae.

Bae and I started off our Pre V-Day Sunday Funday festivities by going to church [y’all… if you can love Jesus together, everything else in your relationship will be a blessing. Real Talk] followed by a sweet little brunch at Common Bond Café & Bakery. Unfortunately for me, Aunt Flo decided to come visit that very morning and I tend to not have much of an appetite. Luckily though, Common Bond’s croissants and cappucinos are just the right amount of food for when you’re not wanting anything heavy at all.

Flaky, buttery heaven

Bae did not have the same issue [boys…] and ordered the Smoked Duck Tartine.

Thinly sliced pieces of smoked duck sandwiched between a toasty slice of pumpernickle coated with a creamy, tangy piquillo cheese spread and arugula topped with a soft yolk egg.

Let me interject briefly with a quick story – Common Bond has been around for a few years and could be considered a Houston landmark for the Westheimer/Montrose area. I have heard nothing but amazing things about this place for the amount of time it’s been open. I went a few years back and did not understand the wait as I was thoroughly unimpressed. But this smoked duck tartine has me wanting more!

Needless to say, hats off to the chef.

Which funny enough, Bae actually happens to know the chef! He came to visit with us for a few moments. We learned that when he became head chef, he was told to come up with new items for the menu, the smoked duck being one of them. He also had us try some of his dessert creations. Seriously incredible! I’m not a huge sweets person, but you HAVE to give credit for the presentation. And if you’re a fan of rich, decadent, sugary goodness, you’ll have to give the desserts at Common Bond a go!

And for Valentine’s Day – a cute pink, heart shaped take on Creme Brulee – some of my favorite things in 1!

Following brunch was time for ultimate rest and relaxation. Just reminiscing on this part of our day date makes me wish spa days never have to end. We headed to the shops on West Ave in River Oaks to Milk + Honey day spa for couple’s massage and couple’s pedicure (my gift to us)

This spa feels lavish all while making YOU feel relaxed, serene and calm. They ask that you arrive at least 30 minutes early, but I recommend getting there at least and hour early to undress and change into one of their amazingly warm, fuzzy and plush robes and the pair of slippers they provide for you upon arrival.

After changing into your robe and slippers, you can head into the “tranquility” room – gray, white & gold hues, luscious and cozy pillows, succulents on the end tables provided to place your glasses of cucumber water or cup of tea – while you wait to be called for your turn to be pampered.

Really there’s nothing I’ve done so far in my 2 (almost 3) decades of life as romantic as a couple’s massage. It’s intimate without touching. Something about being pampered side by side with someone you love is both thrilling and calming at the same time.
After the massage and pedicure, we were able to hang out in the “tranquility room” a little longer before finally heading back out into the real world and preparing for the next day.

This sort of Sunday Funday will also probably be duplicated because honestly, everyone loves brunch and everyone loves a good, luxurious massage. Put the two together, and you have the perfect recipe for a wonderful day.

So what kind of makeup does one wear with neutrals? Well… I could’ve done a thick wing with neutral/nude lips and done a whole Brigitte Bardot thing considering I took a lot of inspiration from Parisian glam for my outfit (post here) but it’s Valentine’s Day! A red lip would be inappropriate NOT to wear!! (unless red lips are like, your one bugaboo)

A classic glam winged eye look used to be my THING!! I wanted to bring back pin-up glam without doing the total rockabilly thing. Then I realized that you don’t have to do a wing for every. single. makeup look always. When I DO wing it out like this, man, it brings back all the memories.
